Calvin de Haan is a player most Colorado Avalanche fans have probably already forgotten about. His one short stint in Colorado this season left a lot to be desired.

With the Avalanche

He was a free agent from the Tampa Bay Lightning the Avs jumped on. On July 1, he inked a one-year contract worth $800K. At the time, he seemed like a good addition to a blue line looking for help.

de Haan played 44 games for Colorado, where he spent most of the season playing. He ended the year scoreless and with seven assists at Ball Arena. On average, he played 14:55 per game.

He was a good hitter and blocker, as he had 58 and 59 of each, respectively. However, similar to one of his defensive partners this season in Josh Manson, he struggled moving the puck. He had 35 turnovers in those 44 games.

With the Rangers

His time in the Mile High City was short-lived. On March 1, he was sent to the New York Rangers alongside Juuso Parssinen and conditional second and fourth-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft. In return, the Avalanche received Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey, and Hank Kempf.

With the Blueshirts, he found life extremely difficult. He only played in three games, the first three games after he was traded to the Rangers. He did get one assist in his first game in a 4-0 win over the Nashville Predators.

However, he didn’t hit the ice at all after early March. It left him frustrated, making some strong remarks about the organization and his season as a whole.

Ever since starting the first six years of his career with the New York Islanders, de Haan hasn’t found much stability. Since then, the 34-year-old Canadian defender has played for five teams. This included the Avs, Rangers, Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks, and two stints with the Carolina Hurricanes.

As he has been the last couple of seasons, Calvin de Haan became a free agent on July 1. It’s still unknown whether or not he’ll keep pursuing to play or retire. If a team decides to take him on will hope he can be a good veteran presence with some solid playing time.
