Devon Toews had an outstanding year. Once again, Toews played as the top pair for the Colorado Avalanche alongside Cale Makar. He finished the year with 10 goals and 34 assists and plus 30. These numbers are all well short of his career highs in 2021–22, but that team was on another level.

Toews remained a constant player in the lineup. He even represented the country of Canada in the Four Nations Faceoff this season. Surprisingly, this was the first time that the Abbotsford native has worn the red and white. In the tournament, Toews played all four games for Canada, securing zero points and finishing minus one.

Throughout the season, Toews played on the second power play unit that saw very little ice time. Because of that, he would only have three power play points at the end of the season. But it was his defensive play that made a difference. The Canadian’s stick was always in the right place at the right time, leading to poke checks.

Toews has also become known for his leadership off of the ice. Wearing the alternate captain “A” for most of the year, he has helped lead the team. He was a calm, yet effective tool on the blueline that Colorado needed. Toews is often one of the loudest voices in the locker room, even though he does not want to be. Many analysts say that if Gabriel Landeskog were to leave the team, Toews or Makar would take over as captain of the Colorado Avalanche.

Bumps and bruises led to a rest for the defenseman at the end of the regular season. The past two seasons, he had played over 80 games each. This season, Toews played only 76 games. He was in Loveland, Colorado, during his recovery, where he supported his captain’s return to the ice with the Colorado Eagles.

Toews was one of the more consistent players on the blue line for the Avalanche this year, which is something that they needed. If he can play a lot like he did this season, the Avalanche should have no issues on the top pair.
