Winner of both the Conn Smythe trophy in 2021-22 and the James Norris Memorial Trophy the same year, Cale Makar has become a household name from Colorado and beyond.
This year, he flaunted a career high of 30 goals and 62 assists in his 80 played games. From someone working behind the blue line, it is an incredibly offensive feat.
Makar has been to the postseason with the Avalanche his entire career. Normally, he is a reliable player with the ability to generate points in clutch situations. In the 2023-24 season, he produced a staggering 15 points in only 10 games.
But, this season told a different story. As he went face to face with the Dallas Stars in a whirlwind seven-game series, he seemed to struggle to play to his identity, only scoring one goal and four assists. Despite speculation of a slowing injury, nothing ever was confirmed.
He also took part in the Four Nations Face Off representing Canada with teammates, Nathan MacKinnon and Devon Toews. In Canada’s victory, Makar played in three of four games, securing one assist.

But Makar is not the only Makar in the Avalanche system. His younger brother, Taylor, made his AHL debut with the Colorado Avalanche’s affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, this season.
In fact, Cale made multiple trips to Loveland. Whether it was supporting the return of captain Gabriel Landeskog or supporting his brother, he was no stranger to Blue Arena. With the Avalanche’ season at a close but another five-game series ahead of the Colorado Eagles, he will probably make more appearances.

The defenseman has until the 2026-27 season with the Avalanche before becoming an UFA with a $9 million cap hit.
