The Colorado Avalanche continued its trend of signing players whose deals expire next summer. Next up was Josh Manson, signing for two years.

Manson has been a prolific figure on the blue line for the Avs since he was traded to Colorado by the Anaheim Ducks in 2022. The American defender and Stanley Cup Champion has enjoyed his four seasons in the Mile High City.

In 48 games last year, he scored one goal and dished out 14 assists. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he upped his offensive game with two goals and an assist in the seven-game series against the Dallas Stars.

Manson’s average of over 18 minutes a night seems to solidify him as the fourth defender for Colorado, despite critiques. His veteran and defensive mindset helped him block 59 shots and throw 105 hits in the regular season.

However, it meant he struggled once again with injury throughout the year. He’s only played a maximum of 76 games in a season with the Avalanche, and he has only once played in all 82 games. It likely helped contribute to his 74 turnovers last season.

The New Contract and Implications

The 33-year-old right-handed defenseman was on an expiring contract at the end of the upcoming 2025-26 season. It was going to be the end of a four-year deal with an AAV of $4.5 million.

His new two-year contract will take him to the end of the 2027-28 season. The cap hit will be a $3.95 million AAV and take him to the age of 35. With a rising cap, it’s not a shabby deal.

The Manimal will likely be paired alongside Samuel Girard as he has been for most of his time in Denver. He has flipped and been paired with Sam Malinski at points, and will likely continue this trend.

This also shuts down any trade rumors around him to save money and open room for more moves. Nonetheless, it solidifies Josh Manson as a member of the Avalanche for a little bit longer.
