CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche have wrapped up another day of Development Camp. Day two is now in the books and we are seeing who will set themselves apart from the group. Some players look like they are going through the routine. Some look like they are fighting for a future spot in the roster. The coaches went through much of the same drills as they did on Tuesday. This time, they picked up the pace and pushed the players a little harder. They wanted to see if the players could handle the extra pressure and stay on their feet. Here are the standouts from day two of development camp for the Avalanche.

Lucas Wahlin

The Avalanche invited Lucas Wahlin to camp, and he remains unsigned. Born in 2001, he just turned 23 in May and went to the University of St. Thomas. Last season, he played with Cooper Gay, whom the Avalanche have already signed. In just three more games than Gay last season, Wahlin tallied 11 more points. He has shown that he has a sturdy stick with stick lifts and can manage himself in front of the net. Wahlin has some surprising speed around the corners as well. He dips his shoulder and takes off. I wouldn’t be surprised if a team offers Wahlin a contract after camp.

Christian Humphreys

Christian Humphreys spent most last season with Kitchener Rangers of the OHL (Gabriel Landeskog’s team). In 28 games, he had 11 goals and 22 assists. But, watching him over the last couple of days, he is the kid with raw talent. Humphreys has an eye for the top of the net and skating to go along with it. Humphreys will return to the Rangers next season, but he gives Avalanche fans something to look forward to after next season if he comes to the organization.

Tory Pitner

The Avalanche drafted Tory Pitner last summer and played for the University of Denver under coach David Carle. He had only one assist in his 40 games, but Pitner shows a lot of promise. He can keep his head up while looking through the zone and going down the blue line. This is a major plus as a defenseman. This allows him to make a shot through traffic easily and get it through. His edge work has been excellent, a product of playing at DU. Now with Zeev Buium going to the Minnesota Wild, his ice time will increase this season, as will his skill and production.

Although a lot of the prospects at the camp are Colorado Eagles or invites, some are showing promise. With enough hard work, some could get an offer. Even if it is an AHL offer, it is something. As long as they get into the organization, that is all that matters.
