On Wednesday afternoon, the Colorado Eagles announced they had signed their captain, Jayson Megna, to a one-year extension. The 36-year-old is having a career year in Loveland. In 66 games, he has matched his career high in goals (26), which he set 14 years ago. Megna is also just five points short of his career high in points (55) set in 2023–24 with Providence. He just keeps getting better with age.
“You go through peaks and valleys of the season, getting points and all that stuff,” Megna told me last month. “But I think the main thing that, honestly, I care about is just making sure that we get two points in the win column, and if I can help my team out in that way. That’s great, but it’s not something that I’m super concerned about or breaking personal records.”

Lead by example
Megna sets the tone for the offense in Loveland by doing nothing other than what he should. His 51 points are second on the team, and his 26 goals lead the team. The Florida native remains within the team’s top five scorers for consecutive seasons. His penalty killing is bar-none one of the best on the team with his two shorthanded goals this season.
What this means for the Eagles
This means that the Eagles already have part of their leadership group coming back next season. Megna, already on his second stint with Colorado, is in his third year as captain. Additionally, there are no guarantees that TJ Tynan or Jacob MacDonald will return next season since they have not signed a new contract yet. Keaton Middleton and Wyatt Aamodt have one more year left on their contracts, and have been part of the leadership group as well.

This will be a great place to build the roster from for the Eagles over the summer. Adding forwards like Matthew DiMarsico, Nikita Prishchepov, Gavin Brindley, Tristen Nielsen, and Taylor Makar besides Ivan Ivan will give them a solid young core of forwards that Megna can mentor. On the backend, add Alex Gagne and Sean Behrens to the mix, and the roster is shaping up to look pretty solid in front of Trent Miner and Ilya Nabokov.
Every player who comes through Loveland, including Jayson Megna, has one goal in mind: win the Calder Cup. And having a leader like Megna will only make that possibility a reality.
